You’ve taken the plunge! You’re the proud owners of your very first home. Of course, you’re eager to turn it into something that truly reflects your style and personality, including that dingy kitchen that hasn’t seen an update in at least 15 years. What can you do when the project seems overwhelming, and your funds are limited?
DO begin with a plan and a budget. Evaluate each component of the space and make note of what’s in good shape, what’s OK for now, and what is just plain beyond repair. The items that absolutely need to be replaced are going to form the backbone of your budget and determine how much you’ll have for updating other elements in the kitchen.
DO your research! There’s lots of information available on cabinetry, appliances, countertops and other elements in the kitchen, and much of that is provided by the manufacturers who want you to buy those products. You have to learn to separate quality information from sales pitch! Visit the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s (NKBA) website (www.nkba.org) for tips on all aspects of kitchen and bath projects and links to other organizations to help in your research.
DO borrow from others! There are many kitchen design publications and websites available that are packed with ideas and tips that you can adapt to your own project. It’s important to take your time and build an “idea file” for inspiration.
DON’T overestimate your do-it-yourself abilities or the time you have to devote to the project. It’s tempting to look only at the money you could save and not the added time, stress and frustration that often accompanies a DIY project.
DON’T think you have to go it alone. Many kitchen designers will work on an hourly fee basis to help you develop your ideas and a project schedule so that the renovation will move along smoothly.
